Personally, I think I was lucky that my first Slackware box is on ugly
hardware, making it difficult to use the GUI. I think it's helpful to
get a decent grip on the CLI side of things before starting X.
One site that helped me a lot was http://www.linuxcommand.org/ . The
first page described me perfectly when I was starting. The site will
get you through a lot of the basics
