Jack,
I have a subnotebook around here which can be a pain to convince to boot
from things other than the hard drive and I've always just installed the
operating system from itself, even clean installs. It's a bit risky since
if the installer crashes you're potentially left with an unbootable system,
but you can always pull the hard drive, hook it up to a 2.5" to 3.5" IDE
adapter and hook it up to a desktop system to fix it in the unfortunate
event that happens. There are instructions for how to install Linux from a
Windows install right here:
http://marc.herbert.free.fr/linux/win2linstall.html
If your system has a Windows partition on it you can use those instructions.
If not, then you can still read between the lines and figure out how to
boot the Ubuntu installer from Grub under Linux. I've done this plenty of
times with Ubuntu, but I don't have any step-by-step instructions handy at
the moment.
HTH,
